The December/January issue of Field and Stream magazine recognizes Ken Miracle of Boise, Idaho, as one of it “Heroes of Conservation” for his tireless volunteering on behalf of sage grouse, including the NRCS-led Sage Grouse Initiative. Featured heroes receive a $500 grant from Toyota to apply to a conservation project. He is a contestant for the national hero of conservation award.
“I’ve been infatuated with sage grouse since I was 3 years old, says Miracle in the column, “and I can’t go into the field without checking out habitat conditions.”
Field and Stream cited Miracle’s efforts on behalf of the Owyhee County Sage Grouse Local Group, The Nature Conservancy, and the Sage Grouse Initiative. He’s helped to restore wet meadows, seeded eroded streambanks, sprayed noxious weeds, and marked fences to prevent sage grouse collisions. Miracle conducts tours of the sage grouse leks, where males perform their spring courtship dances. He doesn’t go far without a camera on his shoulder and generously donates his photography of sagebrush wildlife to raise awareness.
