Sage Grouse Video on ‘Oregon Field Guide’ Nominated for Emmy Award
Oregon Public Broadcasting ran an excellent video story about sage grouse on Oregon Field Guide, which is nominated for a Northwest Regional Emmy Award. The video, produced by Vince Patton, stars SGI biologist, Jeremy Maestas, who guides viewers on an action-packed tour of a high-desert lek at dawn.

Last fall, Oregon Public Broadcasting ran an excellent video story about sage grouse on Oregon Field Guide, OPB’s long-running weekly TV series covering natural resources, ecological issues, and outdoor recreation across the Northwest. The video, produced by Vince Patton, stars SGI biologist, Jeremy Maestas, who guides viewers on an action-packed tour of a high-desert lek at dawn:
“We’ve got some hens here which means the boys are extra excited,” whispers Jeremy Maestas. “Just like the human world, the reason the boys are here is because the girls are here.” The video shows more than a dozen males popping, strutting, and dancing to find a mate.
Maestas says both grouse and cattle need abundant, healthy bunch grasses, which is why the NRCS-led Sage Grouse Initiative promotes sustainable ranching that allows sage grouse to co-exist in cattle country.
And, cue the drumroll, please…this OPB sage grouse segment was nominated for a Northwest Emmy Award! Winners will be announced at the 52nd Annual Regional Emmy Awards on June 6, 2015 in Seattle. Read the OPB full story here and watch the video below:
