- Elk are part of the deer family. Early British settlers mistook them for a species of moose and called them “elk,” the British term for moose.
- Elk are ruminants with four-chambered stomachs. Like cattle, they are primarily grazers, though they will browse at times, like deer and moose.
- Wapiti (originally waapiti) is a Shawnee and Cree word for elk that means “white rump.”
